Outdoor security lights are a vital part of any home security system. Home security lights light up the garden
and drive to alert you to a prowler on your premises. These outdoor lights are normally off, but when the motion
detector senses movement, they are switched on. If would-be burglars are caught in a floodlight, they usually
high-tail it to someone else's property. Therefore, adequate outdoor security lights are your front line of defense
against burglars.
Outdoor Security Lights
Outdoor security lights are the most cost-effective of all the electronic home security gadgets and, if you get
solar powered outdoor security lights, they are very easy to install and cheap to run. Coupled to a PIR (passive
infra red) motion sensor they offer an impressive level of deterrence for little money.
Although the prime function of outdoor security lights is to deter would-be burglars, they have a family
friendly use too. If you put a quartz halogen lamp fixture over your front door pointing down the drive, it will
light the way for you and your visitors as a welcoming gesture when someone arrives. No more tripping over uneven
flagstones or stray bits of bush. Motion sensor lights have a safety aspect too.
Likewise in the backyard, a PIR controlled light will allow you to see your way around the yard at night and
switch itself back off when you go back inside. This is very handy, if you have left the washing out or cannot find
the dog's bowl.
It is best if you attach your outdoor security lighting to motion sensors that are aimed in the range above four
feet off the ground so as to miss animals, although if anyone comes on to your property the outdoor security lights
will come on.
Depending on how far you want to take things, the PIR's on your outdoor security lights can also be wirelessly
connected to the main security control box, which can be programmed to beep if any of the peripheral lights are
activated. This is ideal, if you are accustomed to drawing the curtains at night, in which case you would not see
the outdoor security lights come on.
If you have a panic button on the table next to you or hanging around your neck (you can even get them in
watches and brooches), you can activate the main outdoor siren and strobe light and all the outdoor security lights
at the push of a button, if you see someone caught in your floodlights.
This is a very effective way of scaring burglars off and alerting your neighbours that you feel threatened.
Outdoor security lights can also be activated, if you just want to light up a particularly beautiful bush that
is in bloom or a garden pond with a waterfall because they have an on-off switch too. Outdoor security lighting is
very useful, very versatile and very reassuring, especially if you are elderly or live alone in a house.
